Did You Know...

Colonel Harlan’s Stirrups

Future Justice John Marshall Harlan utilized this pair of brass stirrups during the American Civil War. Born in Boyle County, Kentucky, Harlan left a burgeoning political career to join the Union cause in 1861. He later recruited and commanded the 10th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry Regiment, serving as colonel until 1863, when his father’s death prompted him to resign. Harlan and his family owned slaves and he was opposed to abolition when the war began, but he staunchly supported the Constitution and fought for the preservation of the Union.
