Did You Know...

Music with Mrs. Washington

On October 13, 1785, future Supreme Court Justice Bushrod Washington married Julia Ann Blackburn. Washington was the nephew of President George and First Lady Martha Washington and he inherited Mount Vernon upon Mrs. Washington’s death in 1802. Bushrod and his wife continued the tradition of musical entertainment at the estate established by previous generations. An amateur musician herself, Julia Washington furnished the property with instruments and music books while hosting a variety of musicians to the delight of family and guests.
