The Supreme Court of the United States will honor the memory of the late Retired Associate Justice Byron R. White on November 18 with a meeting of the Supreme Court's Bar, followed by a special sitting of the Court.

The Bar meeting--at 1:45 p.m. in the Upper Great Hall--will feature remarks by the Solicitor General of the United States Theodore B. Olson; Judge David M. Ebel of the U. S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit; former Assistant Attorney General Herbert Jack Miller; former Solicitor General of the United States Seth P. Waxman; and Yale Law School Professor Kate Stith-Cabranes. Former Deputy Assistant Attorney General Larry L. Simms will serve as chairman of the meeting. At the meeting's conclusion, Bar members are expected to adopt a commemorative resolution. Columbia University School of Law Professor Lance Liebman and University of Chicago Professor Dennis J. Hutchinson serve as co-chairmen of the Bar's Committee on Resolutions. David Ebel, Kate Stith-Cabranes, Larry Simms, Lance Liebman, and Dennis Hutchinson all clerked for Justice White.

A Special Session of the Court will be held in the Courtroom at 3 p.m. U. S. Solicitor General Theodore B. Olson and the Attorney General of the United States John Ashcroft will address the Court. Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist will respond on behalf of the Court. Attendance at the memorial sitting and meeting of the Bar is by invitation.

Members of the press corps are welcome to attend both events; please notify the Public Information Office if you intend to do so. The reception that follows the memorial sitting is closed to the press. We will make every effort to provide copies of all remarks as well as the commemorative resolution in advance.

Justice White's law clerks have established a scholarship fund in the Justice's name at the University of Colorado under which scholarships will be awarded to Colorado students based on outstanding academic and athletic accomplishment. Inquiries about the scholarship fund may be made to Eric Doepel of the CU Foundation at 303-735-3755.
