Justice Sandra Day O'Connor has today sent the attached letter to the White House notifying the President of her retirement from the Supreme Court effective upon the nomination and confirmation of her successor.

Justice O'Connor was nominated by President Ronald Reagan on July 7, 1981 and was sworn in on September 25, 1981. She was the first woman appointed to the Supreme Court of the United States.
