Before They Were Justices — Mayor Harold H. Burton

Born in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1888, Harold H. Burton graduated from Harvard Law School in 1912 and moved to Cleveland, Ohio. He practiced corporate law and pursued a variety of state and local government positions. Twice elected mayor of Cleveland (1936 and 1938), he worked to remove corruption from the city, expanded roadways through New Deal programs such as the Works Progress Administration, and hosted the 1936 Republican National Convention. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1940, and on September 18, 1945, President Harry S. Truman nominated him to the Supreme Court.
