Get Me to the Judge on Time

While a professor at Harvard Law School, Felix Frankfurter proposed to Marion Denman in the back of a New York City taxicab after dating for nearly six years. Frankfurter sought out a non‑religious officiant, first asking his mentor, Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, but under then‑existing New York laws, Holmes lacked the necessary legal authority. The hopeful groom eventually turned to another friend, Judge Benjamin N. Cardozo of the New York Court of Appeals, and Cardozo married the couple on December 20, 1919. In a twist of fate, Frankfurter would eventually occupy the same seat on the Bench that Holmes and then Cardozo had held when Frankfurter succeeded Justice Cardozo on January 30, 1939.
